WHY HEMP IN AUROVILLE?

Hemplanet aims to transition the international township of Auroville into a hemp based economy, where the farmers, manufacturers, consumers and the environment all reap the benefits.

With Auroville's existing production units manufacturing various food, cosmetic, textile, construction and paper products, hemp can supply them all.

The urgent need to develop a sustainable model that can provide for people's needs at the same time as facing the growing threat of climate change and the scarcity of water, mean that hemp is a solution.

Hemplanet envisions a near future where Auroville farms can pioneer the cultivation of industrial hemp in South India.

With the necessary processing machinery and infrastructure in place, Auroville could be a true model in sustainable and environmentally friendly practices that benefit all.

What does a
hemp-based economy mean?

Our vision for a hemp-based economy entails cultivating and processing the plant and harnessing Auroville manufacturing units to use hemp’s raw materials in their products, thereby benefitting our farmers, workers and consumers as well as our soil and air.

  • The seed can be used in all food units, animal feed and body care units.

  • The fibre in all textile / garment units and in paper and construction.

  • The hurds can be used in construction / furniture making.

Growing and processing the crop within Auroville allows us to become a truly self-sustainable community.

Hemp unleashes the potential to improve human and planetary health AND ALSO CONTRIBUTES TO OVER 10 global sustainable goals.

Towards a green Economy

" A GREEN ECONOMY based on a hemp multi-industry complex that can provide income for farmers in every state.... thousands of new products generating tens of thousands of sustainable new jobs. Hemp energy farming will become the backbone of a trillion dollar-a-year non-polluting energy production industry. And the petroleum corporations need not fear this for their expertise, hardware and manpower are vital to turning the farmers’ raw biomass into refined fuels.

These projections represent a tremendous boon to our flagging economy that can be realized as a by-product of saving our world from human-induced biocide. If we as a society have the courage and determination to set upon this bold path to planetary restoration, we can, in our lifetimes, leave a healthier world to our children; and a lifestyle based on renewable resources in a balanced ecosystem that our children can leave to their children for generations to come. "
